Retired teacher’s throat cut, man held
A New Bedford man has been ordered held without bail in the killing of a retired teacher whose body found at her Fairhaven home earlier this month.
The Standard Times reports that prosecutor Patrick Driscoll said in court Wednesday that the victim, 69-year-old Joyce Howland, was nearly decapitated when her throat was cut. He said her spine also was fractured in the Oct. 14 attack.
Thirty-six-year-old Joshua Silva pleaded not guilty in New Bedford District Court to charges of murder and armed robbery.
Howland’s body was found the day after she was killed by a friend who went to her home after being unable to reach her.
